Dr. Abraham Halpern |
Dr. Abraham L. Halpern is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry
at New York Medical College and Former President of the American
Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. His outstanding contributions
to psychiatry include teaching, publishing, consulting, and
membership in professional societies.
Dr. Halpern's tireless efforts
to expose the political abuse of psychiatry in China through
national and international bodies and the media led to
an investigation of this extensive abuse. He contributes
as
a member of editorial boards of respected American journals
on medicine and psychiatry.
Dr. Halpern is highly regarded
for his community service and since 1992 has been a member
of the United Nations Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention
and Criminal Justice, representing both the International
Council of Prison Medical Services and the World Psychiatric
Association.
In addition to numerous other awards and honors,
in the year 2000 Dr. Halpern received the Human Rights
Award from the American Psychiatric Association. In March,
2003, he received the Medical Society of the State of New
York’s
President’s Citizenship Award for 2003. Dr. Halpern
was honored “in recognition of prolonged
and distinguished service to the community in addition, and
unrelated, to his professional practice.”
