Noted psychiatrist calls for independent investigation

It has been more than a year since an investigative journalist revealed the presence of a concentration camp in China where live Falun Gong practitioners were having their organs removed for transplantation. Despite the international outrage that resulted from ensuing reports implicating hospitals and military installations across China, the government has yet to allow a thorough, completely independent investigation of the charges.

In an effort to stop Chinese physicians from the unethical removal of the bodily organs of Falun Gong practitioners, Friends of Falun Gong board member and New York Medical College Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry Dr. Abraham L. Halpern is calling for a massive email campaign directed at the World Medical Association. It is Dr. Halpern’s contention that without such a concerted effort, the glacial pace of diplomatic efforts will surely result in more lives lost. He urges concerned individuals to demand the Chinese Medical Association be expelled from the World Medical Association if China does not allow an independent WMA investigation into reports that Chinese physicians are removing the organs of Falun Gong practitioners.

While the Chinese regime has denied the shocking practice, in July 2006, Canadian human rights advocates David Matas and David Kilgour released the results of an independent investigation they conducted, and have since presented to government officials in over 30 countries. They found that the allegations of organ harvesting were credible. Matas is an internationally respected attorney, while Kilgour is a former Canadian Secretary of State and Member of Parliament. Dear Dr. Arumugam,

On behalf of the millions of Falun Gong practitioners who are being persecuted by the Chinese government, I am writing to urge the World Medical Association to demand an independent investigation of allegations of organ harvesting of live Falun Gong practitioners in China. An independent investigation by renowned Canadian human rights advocates David Matas and David Kilgour, found credible evidence that these shocking allegations are in fact true.

We commend the WMA for demanding, in its May 22, 2006 press release, that China cease these horrifying practices. However, the 2007 revised Kilgour-Matas report presents additional evidence of continued atrocities, including:

+ Additional admissions from hospitals that they have Falun Gong organs for transplant;

+ Additional testimony from witnesses about the disappearance of massive numbers of Falun Gong practitioners in detention who refused to identify themselves to authorities;

+ The Chinese government’s failure to implement the law enacted July 1, 2006 prohibiting the harvesting of organs without consent;

+ The failure of foreign laws and ethics to provide an effective barrier to transplant tourism to China;

+ The absence of effective foreign warning transplant sources in China through travel advisories and other information programs;

+ The absence of any meaningful answer or contradiction from the Government of China to the first version of the report; and more.

In its May 11, 2007 press release, the WMA expresses its concern and support for physicians forced to participate in torture. Indeed, many physicians in China face extreme pressure to comply with this atrocity, which has been condemned by transplantation societies in Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the National Kidney Foundation. Their lives can become a living hell, as we know from the ex-wife of an eye surgeon, who testified about the physical and mental trauma her former husband endured.

However, although the physicians have little choice, the victims have none.

A shocking BBC video shot inside a Chinese hospital shows a doctor and an agent admitting the use of executed prisoners’ organs, claiming the prisoners donated them “as a present to society.” The agent then tells the undercover reporter that many organs become available before national holidays as a way for the government to ”maintain stability.”

According to an intelligenceonline.com report, “China’s deputy public security minister Liu Jing has been handed the job of stamping out the Buddhist-Taoist Falun Gong [spiritual group] before the Olympic Games in 2008.” Reports by Amnesty International and the London Times corroborate the Chinese government’s determination to “clean up” all forms of dissent before the 2008 Olympics.

Nonetheless, China has been defiant in its denials and refusal to allow independent investigation, although it pledged to increase human rights if were awarded the Olympic Games. It is time that the Chinese communist government be forced to allow independent, unannounced and unhindered investigation of its hospitals and labor camps, or face WMA expulsion of its doctors.

The WMA cannot in good conscience advocate for ethical practices on the one hand, and continue to tolerate organ harvesting atrocities on the other by conferring the privilege and status of WMA membership.
